4 Money Saving Tips For College Students
Financially, college can be a struggle for anyone. Higher learning is an expensive proposition because of tuition, lodging, books, supplies, food and all the small expenditures. If there was a time that somebody should be serious about saving their money and spending smarter, it would be the college years. If you are looking to save some money to make college less of a financial burden, here are 5 tips.
1. Track your spending and create a budget. By tracking your spending, you are becoming more knowledgeable about exactly where your money is going. This is extremely important when creating a budget. Whether it is a very strict budget or more a spending guideline, I recommend having some sort of plan for your personal finances. Know how much you have in expenses per semester and how much income are bringing in. This information will give you a clear view of your buying power and current financial state. If you don't have a financial plan, it is much easier to have debt problems and need debt relief counseling. 2. Control your spending. After you make your budget, you will most likely see that you don't have a whole lot of money left over after expenses. Unless you are a full time student with a terrific part time job, chances are you aren't pulling in that much income while you are at school. Do what you can to control your spending. Buy your food at cheaper, discount grocery stores. Buy cheap beer and purchase your books online. Whichever financial shortcuts you can afford to take you should take.
3. Plan for the future. I know that it can be tough, but it is important to plan for the future. Don't blow all of your spending money on one weekend. College is as much about having fun as it is learning, so you should spend money on entertainment. I only suggest thinking for the future. Spending $20 instead of $50 on a Friday and Saturday night can be the difference between a tight financial future and a comfortable one.
4. Be smart with your credit card. There is a very good article written about college students and credit cards entitled “Credit Card Advice For College Students”. I agree with pretty much all of these points made. Relying on your credit card in college can be a one way ticket to years of debt problems and debt consolidation. A credit card is good for emergencies and online purchases, but isn't good for bar tabs and McDonald's. Be smart with your credit card and make the payments on time!
